Allmand family letters, 1844-1858.

The collection contains two letters to George T. Blow, Jr., from R. Blow and Elizabeth T. Blow, 1844, 1848, mentioning changed circumstances in life, sick slaves, devices to aid a crippled child and family news. The bulk of the collection consists of letters to John O'Grady Allmand, employed in Baltimore at the firm of Pegram, Paynter & Davis, from various friends and family members including Albert, Nora and W.H. Allmand, George Newton and George Loyall, Jr. Topics include a trip to Fredericksburg, and Washington, D.C.; a drinking party withan obscene reference to the new fashion of hoop skirts; life as a purser on the U.S. merchant ships "Arctic" and "Baltic," 1854; the purchase of machine made shirts; Virginia elections, 1855; Norfolk yellow fever epidemic, 1855; a comparison of New York City vs. Norfolk; and problems with the alcoholic Albert. The collection also contains an 1854 pass for the use of the Norfolk Club.
